As writers, our aim is to produce work that will be accepted by an editor, agent or publisher. Fiction writers use their creativity to develop stories that have a strong plot, believable characters and realistic dialogue. Writers of non-fiction do their research, check their facts and develop articles and books they know will interest their readers.

But here’s the thing… unless you check your grammar, punctuation and spelling, your manuscript won’t make a good impression — no matter how interesting or creative your writing is.

I’m a writer, but I’m also a publisher, and when someone sends me a manuscript that is riddled with grammatical errors and typos, I’ll admit it puts me off. Bad spelling, grammar and punctuation damage a writer’s credibility and make their manuscript less likely to be accepted.

It may sound harsh, but even if your writing is really good, problems with spelling and grammar can stop it getting a fair reading from an editor, agent or publisher. First impressions count. Your writing is a business and, as a true professional, you need to get every aspect of that business right.

If you’d like to improve your spelling, grammar and punctuation to polish your manuscript, author blog or website, Writing at Work by Ellis Morgan can help. The book will boost your writing confidence and help you to communicate more successfully.

This isn’t a stuffy academic guide to grammar. It’s a 136 page, easy-to-read, practical handbook that will help you put your semicolons, commas, questions marks, and apostrophes in all the right places. You’ll learn how and when to use may and might, who and whom, less and fewer, practice and practise, and you’ll also pick up some useful tips on proof reading. Writing at Work will teach you all of these things and more.

Presented in bite-sized chunks with practical examples, Writing at Work is an A to Z of everything you need to know to polish your manuscript and get your work considered for publication.
